A lot of the time we find the cause is simply an outdated fuseboard, the warning signs to look alongside the frequent tripping are burn/melted marks on the fuseboard and/or a burning smell coming from the unit.

Understanding the main warning signs that your fuseboard is struggling

When your fuseboard keeps tripping, there will usually be other signs that point towards the fuseboard struggling and needing to be replaced, you will most likely experience a combination, or sometimes all of the telltale signs. If the lights keep flickering in your home when you plug in appliances that draw a lot of power, if fuses blow regularly, circuit breakers trip or there is a humming sound coming from the fuseboard - this is a problem.

If you also visually inspect the fuseboard and you notice there is rust or the fuseboard has rewireable fuses and a lack of RCD protection - your fuseboard is an older board that is simply not able to handle the electrical needs of a modern day household and doesn’t follow currently safety regulations that have been put in place with those needs in mind.

An example of this is a call out we recently attended to a customer's home on Normandy lane, East Preston. This was a chalet style bungalow and the happily retired couple have lived there 10+ years. The customer called Tide Electrical Solutions as their fuseboard kept tripping, this had become more frequent and was now happening at least once a week and is now making a buzzing sound - this set alarm bells off in the customers head and they rightly decided it was time to get the fuseboard looked at. When we arrived we were able to instantly tell what was causing this issue, the fuseboard was around 25-30 years old with no RCD protection and was simply not coping with what was being asked of it.

Thankfully, the fix was simply a fuseboard upgrade - a well needed one at that! People often think that a fuseboard tripping is simply a nuisance, it is much more than that and is actually usually an indicator of a bigger problem that needs addressing to prevent possible electrical shock or fire.
