Last week, I was called to a property in the area after the customer started experiencing repeated tripping at their fuse board. It was raining heavily, which immediately gave me a good idea of where to start looking.
Rather than focusing only on the fuse board, I checked the outside electrics. We found an external light that had been poorly installed and was completely rusted through, allowing water inside. The water was bridging across the terminals and causing the circuit to trip.
I removed the faulty light to make the installation safe and get the rest of the circuit working again, then returned to install suitable replacement lighting.
It is the sort of fault we regularly come across when carrying out fault finding around Felpham and the surrounding coastal areas. At Tide Electrical Solutions, Joe and I have 10 years of experience carrying out domestic and commercial electrical work, covering Felpham as well as Elmer, Bognor and Middleton-on-Sea.
If you're looking for an electrician in Felpham, we can help with everything such as replacing a faulty light or socket, electrical testing and complete fuse board upgrades.
Back to topWe carry out a wide range of electrical work for homeowners and businesses, but some jobs come up particularly regularly in this area.
Fuse board upgrades are one of our most requested services in Felpham.
There are plenty of older properties locally that still have ageing wiring and older fuse boards that need some attention. An older fuse board does not automatically mean that an electrical installation is unsafe or that everything needs replacing. We inspect and test what is actually there before recommending the appropriate work.
Where a replacement is required, we can upgrade the existing fuse board to a modern consumer unit with appropriate protection for the installation.
We can also carry out an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) where the condition of the existing wiring needs to be properly assessed before deciding what work is required.
We regularly replace faulty, damaged or outdated lights and sockets.
External lighting is particularly interesting around Felpham and Elmer because properties close to the beach have an additional enemy to contend with: the coastal environment.
We have seen metal outside lights where corrosion has become so severe that the fixing screws simply cannot be undone normally. In situations like this, replacement isn't always as straightforward as removing a couple of screws and fitting a new light. We need to consider the condition of the fitting, cable and connections before installing the replacement.
If you're upgrading outside lighting near the coast, choosing a suitable fitting and making sure it is installed correctly can make a considerable difference to how well it survives.
We carry out EICRs for homeowners, landlords and businesses throughout Felpham and the surrounding area.
An EICR involves inspecting and testing the electrical installation to identify defects, deterioration or safety issues. With some of the older properties we work in locally, it can also provide a much clearer picture of the condition of the existing wiring and consumer unit before larger electrical work is planned.
Back to topBeing an electrician in Felpham means working on everything from relatively modern installations to properties with considerably older wiring.
That experience matters when diagnosing faults. The tripping problem we mentioned earlier is a good example. The fuse board was doing exactly what it was supposed to do by disconnecting the circuit when a fault occurred. The actual problem was water entering an outside light.
Because the fault appeared during heavy rain, checking equipment exposed to the weather was one of our first steps.
Electrical faults are not always sitting conveniently next to the switch or fuse board that appears to be causing the problem. Finding them properly means testing the installation and following the evidence rather than simply replacing parts until the problem disappears.

For emergency electrical work, we aim to provide a same-day response where availability allows.
Back to topOur electrical work starts from £120, with the final cost depending on what needs doing.
Where possible, we'll establish what is required before the appointment so you know what to expect. For work that needs inspecting first, we'll explain the next steps and provide a fixed price based on what we find rather than guessing at the scope of the job.
If testing uncovers something unexpected, we'll explain the issue and the available options before carrying out additional work.
Back to topGet in touch and Jo will take the initial details of the work you need. Depending on the job, we may ask for photographs or a little more information so Joe or Alex can assess what is involved.
From there, we'll arrange the appropriate appointment and keep you updated through the process.
Whether you've got an outside light that trips every time the weather turns British, an older fuse board you're considering replacing, or you simply need some additional sockets installed, we'll tell you what we think is required and why.
