We were recently called to a property in Findon Valley where the customer was having a new kitchen installed. The house had previously been rewired by another electrician and, as part of that work, a supply had apparently been left ready for the new kitchen ring circuit.
When we investigated before carrying out the kitchen electrical work, we found that only one cable had actually been run in.
That meant we couldn't simply connect it up as the new ring circuit as expected. A ring final circuit requires the cable to return to the consumer unit, so we had to run an additional cable to complete the circuit correctly before continuing with the installation.
It's a good example of why we don't assume previous electrical work is correct just because something has been left looking ready to use.
At Tide Electrical Solutions, Joe and I have 10 years of experience carrying out domestic and commercial electrical work. If you're looking for an electrician in Findon Valley, we cover the valley itself as well as Findon Village, Offington and High Salvington.
Back to topWe carry out everything from smaller electrical jobs through to larger upgrades, with EV charger installations, fuse board upgrades, lighting and socket work being particularly common locally.
EV chargers are one of our most requested services around Findon Valley.
Before installing a charger, we look at the existing electrical installation and how the new charger will be supplied. This includes checking the existing consumer unit, available electrical supply and the proposed cable route to the charger.
Every property is slightly different, so the best route from the consumer unit to the driveway or parking area needs to be considered as part of the installation rather than treating every EV charger as a standard fit.
We can talk you through the charger options and what will be required at your property before installation.
One of the more common issues is older consumer units without modern RCD protection.
That doesn't mean we automatically recommend replacing a fuse board simply because it is old. We look at the installation itself and can carry out appropriate electrical testing where necessary before recommending what should actually be done.
Where an upgrade is appropriate, we can replace the existing fuse board with a modern consumer unit providing suitable protection for the installation.
We also carry out plenty of everyday electrical work around Findon Valley, including replacing damaged or outdated sockets, installing additional sockets and replacing or upgrading lighting.
Sometimes these jobs also uncover problems with previous work.
The kitchen installation we mentioned earlier is a good example. From the customer's perspective, the wiring for the kitchen had already been prepared. It was only once we investigated it properly that we discovered there wasn't actually a complete ring circuit there.
We'd rather identify something like that and put it right than connect to existing wiring without knowing exactly what we're working with.
Back to topOne thing we've noticed from working as electricians in Findon Valley is that the general condition of the wiring is often fairly good compared with some of the much older installations we encounter elsewhere.
The consumer unit can sometimes be the part that has been left behind.
We still find properties with older fuse boards that don't have the level of RCD protection you would expect from a modern installation. If you're planning additional electrical work, a new kitchen or an EV charger, the condition of the existing consumer unit is therefore one of the things we'll consider.
It doesn't necessarily mean it needs replacing. What matters is whether the existing installation is suitable for the work being proposed and whether we can safely make the alterations required.

For us, though, a large part of providing a good service is simply doing the basic things properly.
When you call Tide Electrical Solutions, Jo picks up the phone. We'll arrange your appointment, turn up when we say we will and keep you updated throughout the process.
If we discover something unexpected during the work, such as the incomplete kitchen ring circuit, we'll explain what we've found and what needs to happen next rather than simply carrying on and adding an unexpected cost at the end.
For emergency electrical work, we aim to provide a same-day response where availability allows.
Back to topOur electrical work starts from £120, with the final price depending on the work required.
For straightforward jobs, we can often establish what's needed from the information and photographs you provide. For larger work, we'll assess the requirements and provide a clear quotation before proceeding.
EV charger installations and fuse board upgrades need to be assessed individually because the existing installation, cable routes and work required can differ considerably between properties.
If we find something during the job that changes the scope of the work, we'll discuss it with you before carrying out additional work.
Back to topWhen you get in touch, Jo will take the initial details and find out what electrical work you need. We may ask you to send photographs so Joe or Alex can take a look before arranging the appropriate appointment.
We'll then explain the next step, whether that's booking the work directly or arranging for us to assess the installation first.
Whether you're considering an EV charger, have an older fuse board without RCD protection, need new lighting or sockets, or have an electrical problem that needs investigating, we'll explain what we find and what your options are.
